Feature: Tart Cherry Habanero

This quietly seething sangria is a little less sweet, a little sharper on the tongue, and has a score to settle that’s palpable

Yield: 2 cocktails

Ingredients

Drink
  • 1 cup (8 oz) dryish red wine
  • 1/4 cup R-WOL
  • 1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice
  • 10 juniper berries
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 1 dash (1/8 teaspoon) black cardamom
  • 1/4 tart cherry habanero
  • 6 ice cubes
Garnish
  • 10 saffron threads
  • 6 maraschino cherries

Directions

  1. Crack and coarsely grind black peppercorns, juniper berries, black cardamom seeds, and tart cherry habanero with mortar and pestle
  2. Combine ground spices, wine, R-WOL, cherry juice, and ice cubes in cocktail shaker
  3. Shake, shake, shake, shake it up!
  4. Pour into glasses and garnish with saffron threads

Notes

If you don’t have black cardamom, either omit or substitute like, 3 drops liquid smoke. Do NOT substitute green cardamom: they are *not the same*.
